Our first Christmas in Spain

December 3: Well I finally got in the pool! Got in but didn’t swim, freezing it was! Hopefully with our pool cover, next year it’ll be warmer later.

December 5: Pool house built and pool workings moved. Electrics being done Monday along with a few other bits. Our bedroom window replaced and new external blind (persiana) installed. It’s all coming along nicely! On top of that it was 19o yesterday, topped 20o this afternoon.

December 7 & 8: Ooo a Bank Holiday! For the Immaculate Conception no less! Well autumn has finally arrived in Spain! The leaves are turning gold, yellow and brown and there’s definitely more cloud and some of which is even of the grey variety too, than there has been of late. The top of our mountain is covered in low cloud and there’s mist in the valley.

10 December: Tried out a Moroccan/Italian restaurant, Almedina in the town. Fantastic starter of homemade hummus, Tagine of Chicken with apricots and almonds, finished off with Moroccan mielle fuelle without the cream for me and a glass of caramel liqueur – lush!

11 December: The Christmas Tree is up!  Feliz Navidad one and all! Shopping done. Cleaned up after workman outside – pergola repainted and looks fab. Tidied, cleaned and hoovered villa. Cleaned carport. Now time for glass of wine and my annual viewing of White Christmas!

14 December:

Lilycat guarding the presents and Father Christmas (or Papa Noel as he’s known here in Spain!)

Saw the film ‘Spectre’ at the Miramar Centre near Fuengirola, English with Spanish subtitles. Learnt the Spanish word for s**t!   Post ‘Spectre’ meal at another new restaurant, El Fogon de Morales – fabulous steak house!  Wow! What steaks! Good size and so full of flavour! Plus aubergine with cane honey.

15 December:

Our small orchard which we will be altering into a Roman garden incorporating the existing 4 fruit trees.  The thermometer is reading 19o and there’s not a cloud in the sky!

18 December: Post Star Wars nom nom at El Fonda Postillon just outside el Grande. French trained Spanish chef so food is a Spanish/French fusion.

22 December: found the most brilliant garden centre with coffee shop/restaurant – Viveros Guzman in Alhaurin de la Torre, our sister town.

Then we strolled around el Grande to see the Christmas lights before enjoying  fish supper at Casa Paco, our favourite fish restaurant.

Christmas Eve: Back to Fogon de Morales for a steak lunch and yes another glass of rioja!

I never thought I’d be wearing flip flops on Christmas Eve! (Big toe covered as dropped large suitcase on it and it was still healing)

Daddy and Babycat – Christmas Eve nuzzles in the sun!

Christmas Day: He’s been!

Christmas Lunch in one of our favourite restaurants, El Mirlo Blanco in Mijas Pueblo.

Boxing Day: Dear Auntie Liz, thank you for the sangria jug you bought for my mum – I love the box it came in! Lots of love, Lilycat!

27 December: Sampling another rioja in el Grande’s No 1 restaurant, Santiago’s Kitchen.

29 December: Our first rain, although my husband says its only a light drizzle! And I learnt a new skill today – removing a small tick from poor Lilycat! She had a huge one on her side last year in the UK which the vet had to remove. We bought the small plastic tick removers and instructed how to use these should it happen again. Horrible thing and as it died a baby crawled out yuck! Both went down the toilet. Lilycat was positively bouncing after it had been removed!

30 December: Our new outdoor furniture arrived. Cat heaven for our little girl!

30 December – who’d have thought it?!

31 December: 22o!
